Pages from the Legend of Korra Book One: Air Art Book
A beautiful scene of Korra fighting the metal bending police with Republic City in the background. While Korra seems to be having a good time, I can’t say the same for the guy holding on to her…
What looks like some early drawings of Korra. It’s interesting to see how her character design developed.
A nice sketch of Korra water bending and fire bending at the same time, which is pretty cool. Also those are some pretty funny Korra faces. I love the one in the bottom right.
Here we see some of Korra’s outfits and drawings of cute baby Korra. “I’m the Avatar and you gotta deal with it!”
This shows some intersting shots of what looks to be the slums of Republic City, where I assume Mako and Bolin grew up. Also some cool early early character designs for the brothers.
Here get see the finished designs for Mako and Bolin. Mako looks as broody and angsty as usual while Bolin looks as sexy as usual.
Some hilarious Bolin faces with a few Mako drawings as well. Bolin really has the best expressions.

Korra book 1 backgrounds! I was part of the fellowship program at Nickelodeon and was lucky enough to work on Korra! For part of my fellowship I painted background with Fred and Emily! (I learned a lot from them both) Here are a few of those BG’s :D

Still brutally busy, so I’m digging into the archives. This is about as far back as I can dig (10+ years), as this was one of the three color illustrations I did for our initial pitch of Avatar. This image is in the art book, but it is a little small and printed too dark, so I thought it would be cool to show it here. As detailed in the book, we gave our pitch to Nickelodeon two weeks after coming up with the idea. That was a crazy, fertile two weeks.
(I saw a couple of the notes on my dashboard for that Zuko sketch. Yes, Mike and I created Avatar in the spring of 2002, so we’ve been living with the main characters for over 10 years now, even though they didn’t hit the world stage until early 2005.)
I’m having fun looking through the roughs for these old DVD covers. This one is from October of 2005, and is a rare case where I am actually happy with the final version, even now. I like this sketch too, though. This piece always felt very serene to me.
